Simple & fun butterfly coffee filter craft for all ages

Sharing is caring!

While drinking my morning coffee, an idea sparked: A butterfly coffee filter craft.

I envisioned making this craft with my kids so they could run around in the yard, pulling their butterflies through the air as if they were playing with the butterflies.

This fun butterfly coffee filter craft is VERY easy, affordable, and just fun to create with your kids.

Butterfly Coffee Filter Craft

This craft is great for all ages, but I suggest for younger kids that an adult be present. My 7-year-old was able to do this craft by herself, but my 3 year old needed some help.

Supplies

  • pipe cleaners
  • paint (watercolour)
  • Coffee Filter
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Cardboard
  • yarn

Butterfly Coffee Filter Craft

Start your butterfly coffee filter craft by cutting the coffee filter in half. Refer to the photo below to show the top wing and bottom wing of the butterfly.

It’s time to paint! Grab your piece of cardboard and place the wings on top. Since we are painting coffee filters, the water and paint will seep through the filter. I used what I had, which was cardboard, but you can use something else.

Drying doesn’t take long for these butterflies. If your child wants to add more to their butterfly, make sure it’s dry first to ensure it won’t rip.

Now taking both wings, add just a drop of glue to the bottom wing. This is just for extra hold so the wings won’t come apart with play.

Place the top wing on top of the bottom wing like so.

Now, pinch the coffee filters through the middle. If you have to fold the wings like a fan to make it easier, that works too!

Once the wings are pinched together, take your pipe cleaner and wrap it around the middle of the butterfly. Fold the pipe cleaner in half, putting the butterfly in between. Then, wrap the pipe cleaner around the middle, leaving the ends to make the antennas.

For added fun, take twine or yarn, and tie in the centre of the butterfly between the pipe cleaner.

Now you can tape the butterfly to the window, or using the yarn, tape the butterfly to the ceiling.

Where to play with your new butterfly friend

These butterflies aren’t just for fun decorations, but can also be a fun toy for your kids.

Running around outside, while pulling your butterfly is a great activity for your kids! My daughters loved running around the yard, pretending they were playing and running around with butterflies.

Or to be fun, tape them to your ceiling fan and watch them fly. Your kids will find it hilarious, trust me.
