How To Start a Crafty Hobby This Year
Over the last few years, we’ve seen the ‘crafty hobby’ make a huge comeback.
And if you’re the person who decided that THIS YEAR is going to be your crafty year, than you’ve come to the right place.
Whether you’ve been dreaming of knitting up a cozy sweater, sewing a new piece for your wardrobe, or adding a small embroidery to add some extra flair… this is your sign to start!
Crafting is extremely therapeutic and, believe it or not, beneficial for your well-being. You don’t need to spend over budget or have a select set of skills. All you need is curiosity and a spark of creativity.
Here’s everything you need to start a crafty hobby this year.

Why is crafting the perfect hobby?
While any hobby is a great hobby, I find that creating with your hands is beneficial for many reasons. Not only is it great for your brain, but it’s also:
- Therapeutic
- Affordable
- Family-Friendly
- Practical
I highly suggest checking out my blog post all about the benefits of having a hobby.
There are plenty of different hobbies out there, but for myself, I prefer crafty hobbies like sewing, knitting, and embroidery for example. These hobbies force you to use your hands which as we all know, our brains love that. I’ve found that I enjoy my time more and become more calm when I do hobbies that involve my hands.
Picking your crafty hobby
There are so many crafty hobbies to pick from, but don’t be like me and have a bunch because I promise, you’ll get overwhelmed.
Having 2 or 3 is the perfect number, especially if you can combine the 3 to create a project.
Personally, my 2 top favourite hobbies are knitting & sewing.
But how do you figure it out?
You simply need to try them out. I know that’s not the answer you’re looking for, but truthfully, no blog post or video is going to choose a hobby for you.
Experiment with various crafts to determine which one you enjoy the most. Start small, that way you can finish your project quickly. This will help your self esteem, finishing a project.

Easy Crafts to Start With (Beginner Friendly)
I’ve accumulated 3 small projects for multiple different hobbies: sewing, knitting, and crochet. These projects I made

Finding time for your hobby
Truth is, you don’t need hours on your hobby.
And the chances of you starting and finishing a project (unless its a very small project) the same day, is rare. Especially if you’re a mom like me.
Here are a few ways that you can make time for a hobby (even as a mom!!)
- spend at least 20 minutes a day on your hobby
- bring a small project with you whenever you go (great for knitting & crochet)
- craft WITH your kids. Trust me, they will love it
Once you start creating a habit of indulging in your hobby, it will become much easier for you to discover your own rhythm and what works for you.
Now, let’s start crafting!

Yes, I agree! Thank you fellow crafter
I love this! I plan to dedicate more time to handicrafts soon. We have been so busy these last few years (renovating) but we are slowing down now and I’m ready for quiet evenings where I can work on crafts like this. Thanks for the tips!
