How to Knit a Simple Dishcloth, Free Pattern

Sharing is caring!

Truthfully, if I can make it, I won’t buy it. SO if I can knit up a dishcloth, why would I buy one? I’ve knitted up plenty of them over the years, and this pattern I came up with is one that I always tend to go back to.

This dishcloth isn’t stiff and flows nicely, which is great when you’re trying to wash your dishes.

Also, you don’t just have to knit up this for self. Dishcloths are a fantastic Christmas gift! I used to gift them all the time to friends & family.

How to Knit a Simple Dishcloth

Alright, before we get into the fun of knitting, we first need to establish the basics.

Do you already know the basics of knitting? Like casting on, how to knit, how to purl, and how to bind off? If so, then this pattern is for you. This is an extremely beginner friendly pattern, no yarn overs, increases or decreases. Just your basic knitting skills.

Supplies

For this pattern, I used Paint Box yarn which you can find on LoveCrafts

Other yarns you could use is the loops & thread classic cotton which you can find at micheals, lily sugar and cream, or bernat handicraft yarn.

For knitting needle, we are going to increase the needle from the recommendation of the yarn to a US 8 (__mm) knitting needle. I find by doing this, the dishcloth has a better drape.

Other supplies:

  • scissors
  • measuring tape

This knitting pattern is very beginner-friendly. However, if you are new to reading knitting patterns, then I’d highly recommend checking out my blog post on how to read knitting patterns.

While most patterns will have a recommended gauge, this one does not. Truthfully, gauge matters most when the piece is to be worn. Since this is just a small home project, I’d say that gauge isn’t that important.

Using a 8 US (__mm) knitting needles, cast on 44 stitches. I prefer the long tail cast on because of how stretchy it is.

Row 1 & 2: Knit
Row 3: K2 *K1, P1, K1, P1, K
Row 4: K2 (K1, P1)x2, K1, *P2, (K1, P1)x2, K1*, until you reach the last 2 stitches, K2.
Repeat rows 3-4 two more times. Now you should have done a total of 8 Rows.
Row 9: K2, Purl the whole row until you get to the 2 last stitches, K2.
Row 10: Knit

Repeat rows 3 to 10 five more times OR until you like the length of your dishcloth. My finished cloth measures at __.
